100 amp service is the minimum service size allowed by the National Electrical Code. These days though, with more appliances drawing 220 volts of electricity (such as dryers, ranges, and central AC), the standard has become 200 amp service to keep up with the increased demand or draw.

If your home was built before 1950, chances are it may have what’s called knob & tube wiring, an obsolete system that will make it difficult for you to obtain house insurance.

With knob & tube, there’s no ground wire, meaning it can’t accommodate any electrical items with three-pronged plugs. This, of course, greatly increases the risk of shocks and fire, hence the raised eyebrows of the insurance company. Modern wiring is also insulated with plastic, while knob & tube is insulated with rubber. One of the main reasons it is often replaced is due to the breakdown of the insulation over time.

Unsure if you have it? Take a look in the basement. If you see wires running through porcelain cylinders (the tubes) inserted in holes in the wooden floor joists, or notice porcelain knobs to keep the wires secure, you have knob & tube wiring.
