The Six Most Common Plumbing Emergencies

By 28 October 2022Resources

TThe 6 most common plumbing emergencieshere are a lot of plumbing problems that can be considered emergencies. Listen, if you can’t shower, you can’t wash your dishes, or you can’t go to the bathroom in your own home – that’s an emergency. It’s especially problematic at a time when social distancing measures restrict your desire to leave your house in the first place. We’re going to break down the most common plumbing emergencies, and what can be done for them:

Fixtures are Clogged

Whether you can’t flush your toilet or water isn’t going down your kitchen sink’s drain, clogged fixtures can quickly move from hassle to nightmare. Fortunately, you probably have the tools to fix this emergency yourself. Unclogging a toilet can be a fairly straightforward procedure, and unclogging a sink can be done with plungers, vinegar, and baking soda. Those fortunate enough to have a plumbing snake can use that, too.

Clogs that can’t easily be fixed can quickly become household horror stories. You’ll know there’s probably a deeper problem if you find all of your fixtures start to drain slowly or clog up all at once. When you’ve tried all the DIY methods and still find the drain won’t unclog, it’s likely the symptom of a bigger issue. Get in touch with a plumber.

Fixtures are Leaking

Leaking fixtures might not seem like an emergency, much like any slow-working disaster doesn’t seem like an emergency, but neglecting to fix leaky faucets, water heaters, or toilets right away can cause a whole host of problems. Your home can get water damaged, and you’ll certainly end up paying more on your water bill every month. Some leaks can be fixed with relatively little knowledge (leaky faucets, for example, can often be fixed by replacing components), but for some leaks you’ll absolutely need a plumber.

Burst Pipes

Now we’re getting into some emergencies that feel urgent. When there are gallons of water shooting out of a pipe, it’s immediately obvious that it can do some very serious damage to your home. Turn off the water and call a plumber right away.

Sewer Backup

There are few home repair problems more vile than sewer backup; it is not a pleasant experience. By all means, call us if your sewer is backed up – we’ll clear things out. It’s important to note that all homes should have a sump pit and pump, as well as a backwater valve installed to avoid sewage backups.

No Hot Water

When there’s no hot water, you can’t take a hot shower, which to some, is definitely an emergency. You’ll also find yourself unable to wash dishes effectively, and you’ll have a reduced capacity to kill germs when washing your hands. Problems with water heaters tend to worsen very quickly. All us!

Broken Water Lines

Whether it was caused by an overgrown tree root or someone digging for gold in your front yard, broken water lines are a real problem. You’ll find water pressure drops to basically zero, all while your yard gets soaked. Broken water lines should be fixed as soon as possible.
