How To Prevent Leaves From Blocking Drains

By 29 September 2021Winnipeg plumbers

With autumn here, you are probably enjoying the falling of colourful leaves as we transition to colder weather. The leaves can be quite beautiful, but what do you do when they are blocking your drains? This can cause some serious problems for you, your home, and your yard. You need to know how to prevent this from occurring and what to do if it does.

For those who are struggling with too many leaves this fall, here is everything you need to know to prevent them from blocking your drains:

Clean Regularly and Completely

The best way to prevent leaves from blocking your drains is to clean up whenever you notice things starting to pile up. You should get rid of leaves and other debris with a shovel when you notice that the drain is getting covered.

When you spend time doing yard work, refrain from sweeping or blowing leaves directly into the road. The breeze will eventually blow, and those leaves will get pushed toward the drain. Instead, you should rake them up and completely dispose of them when they start to cover your yard.

Purchase a Drain Cover

If you live in an area with lots of leaves, you definitely want to invest in a drain cover. This will let leaves and debris collect over the drain, yet still allow water to pass through it; the cover has gaps that water can easily flow through even if there are lots of leaves on top of it. Keep in mind that you will still need to clean off the drain cover from time to time, but it will be easier and less frequent than clearing a clogged drain.

What should you do if you can’t find a drain cover at your local home improvement store? You can create a makeshift drain cover with some mesh or a plastic net. This will make it easier to remove leaves that build up in your drain area. All you have to do is pick up the mesh or net, dump the leaves into a bag, and replace it. It should take just a few minutes.

Clean the Gutters More Often

It can be dangerous to climb up on a ladder and clear out the gutters, but it is necessary to prevent your eavestrough’s drains from getting clogged with leaves. Gutters that are too full will lead to water backing up, ultimately flooding the yard. As it does so, it will push more debris toward your drain and could lead to clogs.
